Blesbuck (COMMON)

The Blesbok has a prominent white blaze on the face that inspired the name from Afrikaans translating to “Bold”. Its body has a horizontal brown stripe which divides this blaze above the eyes. In our unique habitat, they have a lighter copper appearance with a beautiful coat that reflects in the sunlight.

BONTEBOK

Bontebuck were on the brink of extinction in the early 1900’s but have recovered extremely well due to controlled hunting and exportation of trophies. Bontebuck is the most beautiful in the trio of three, including the Common and White Blesbuck. The Bontebuck has a distinctive colour difference when compared to the Blesbuck, the white shows brighter and displays a beautiful darker coat.

With distinctive black tufted ears, the caracal looks like a caramel-coloured lynx. This colouring allows the cat to camouflage itself using the tall grass of its habitat in Africa, being a skilled hunter it is literally able to “snatch” a bird out of the air. The name Caracal is derived from the Turkish word “karakulak” which means “black ear”.

Impala (Rooibok)

The impala is far more unique and can’t be judged on your first impression. It is the only species in its genus, and the species has changed very little in the past five million years! They have “M” shaped stripes on their rear that look like the McDonald’s logo. The horns, which are hollow at the bottom, are strong and flexible. During fights, the shape of each horn’s arch helps lessen the impact of hits and protects the head.

Kudu

The Kudu is one of Africa’s most beautiful creatures and have spectacular horns that can make almost 3 spirals when fully grown. The Khoisan believe God blessed the Kudu with a white stripe over its face, reaching from 1 eye to the other because they are extremely illusive and so good at hiding. But this stripe enables moonlight to reflect on the stripe allowing better vision at night.

Leopard

In African legends, it says that the leopard’s spots come from a run-in with fire. We can not state this for sure but we do know these spots help make them masters of camouflage and nearly impossible to spot in sun-dappled shadows of the bush. These elusive large carnivores are pound for pound the strongest climbers of all the large cats and can drag prey up to 3 times their body weight into a tree. They often drag carcasses into trees to keep it safe from other predators.

Native to southern Africa the Nyala is a spiral-horned antelope. But only the males have horns and are vastly larger than the females. They differ in colour as well. The females have a Bambi like appearance where the males show off a shaggy crest of hair on the back and form the neck to the hind legs. A truly beautiful animal.

These flightless birds aren’t as useless as we might think, they are capable of running up to 43 miles an hour (70kph) and can change direction by using their wings. They are extremely protective over their eggs and use their long legs and claws as weapons, enabling them to kick and stab lions to death.

Porcupine

They are the largest rodent in southern Africa and one of the largest in the world. They can be distinguished from other porcupine species by the strip of white, short spines that runs along the middle of their rumps and their black-and-white colouring. Spines can measure at 50mm in length and cover their whole body. It does not shoot the spines, but rather they get stuck to whatever touches the animal.

The Roan Antelope is the largest of all the bovidae that are found in Africa. Their name refers to their roan colour, which means that it is a reddish-brown. The bellies are white, as are the cheeks and eyebrows. The rest of the face is black. The single horns are ringed, arching slightly to the back. The males have longer horns, which can reach about a metre in length.

The name hartebeest comes from the Dutch words “hert,” meaning “deer,” and “beest,” meaning “beast.” With strange hat-like horns, narrow face, humped shoulders, sloping back and slim legs you can understand why they call this oddly misshapen antelope a beast. They are also one of the fastest antelopes and are capable of maintaining high speeds at great distances. Speeds can reach up to 34 mph (55 km/h).

Sable Antelope

The Sable Antelope is an incredibly beautiful animal with its glossy black coat and white under belly. We can understand why its Afrikaans name is (Swartwitpens) directly translating to “black white belly”. Its distinctive horns arch backwards and can grow up to 1,2m (4ft) in length in mature males, where the females have shorter and slimmer horns. This majestic Antelope is sought after by all major hunters and is a pinnacle in any hunting fanatic’s life.

The Springbuck gets its name from another Afrikaans word “spring” that means jump because of its trait of running then jumping (pronking), the can leap up to 2 m (6 ft 7 in) into the air repeatedly. It is also the national emblem of the Republic of South Africa. Another unique trait is the pleasant cotton candy-like sweet aroma it releases on its back which opens up after it dies. Truly remarkable!

Warthog

Thanks to Puma, warthogs are easy to spot with their upright tails, erect manes, and regal bearings as they trot through the tall grass. They use their wide snout for rooting in the hard earth, the common warthog is uniquely adapted for the dry savanna. But they can be very dangerous using the sharp tusks to attack. They are able to kill a male lion.
